Wandering

So I think I know where I was going in my last post. See the problem is that sometimes my mind begins to wander. I will be thinking about something, usually when I am driving and I will say to myself “Hey, that would be a good topic to write about.” Then when I get a chance to write it I forget what it was I wanted to say. Kind of like now.

I was talking about how people write comments to articles in the newspaper, online newspapers, and they really don’t know what they are commenting on. But my point was, or was supposed to be that you don’t always know what is “true” and what is opinion anymore. So many people will take what they read, especially online as fact when it is just some writer’s opinion. This can be scary and dangerous at times. For example, if someone is writing a medical blog, how do you know it is the truth, or I guess I should say medical fact? How do you know if it just someone who is spouting their opinion? Or perhaps it is just a medical or pharmaceutical company trying to sell you their product?

I am very skeptical of anything I hear or read these days, as well as very cynical. I believe that everyone is out trying to make a buck off of me. Everyone is trying to get rich quick, they want the big payday and they don’t want to work for it. Everyone is always trying to sell me something, whether and actual product or a way of life. I work hard for my money and I want to keep it. As I wrote in my other blog, “Towing the Line” I am getting afraid to tow cars because everyone is trying to make a buck from me. If I even put a scratch on someone’s bumper, they want me to paint the whole damn car.

Unfortunately this can only bode bad things, if it hasn’t already. I know that now I will refuse to tow a car that I think might be damaged by my loading it onto my tow truck. Which will mean that the customer will be put out some, find someone else to do it and otherwise be inconvenienced by my failure to act, even though this person might not be the one who would make a claim, but how do I know? Where else will we see this? If a doctor is afraid to be sued will he chose to not treat a patient he feels will come after him (which probably already happens)? Will the cop refuse to answer a call because he is afraid he might get sued because he didn’t catch the person who broke into your house and therefore you haven’t retrieved your stolen property?

I believe this already happens to some extent. Look at our public school system. When I was in school, maybe four or five years ago, teachers weren’t afraid to discipline us when we did something wrong. If you were talking out loud when you weren’t supposed to you might get a slap with a ruler on the back of the hand. Would that happen today? I highly doubt it, not only would the parents of the child sue the school system and the teacher, they would also press charges as well. And we wonder what has happened to discipline in this country?

I remember when I was running my Dad’s grocery store and there was a serious problems with the cashiers cashing bad checks, and I am talking bad checks not just insufficient funds type check, stolen checks, counterfeit checks, etc, and I finally put my foot down and said “Next one who cashes one of these without following the proper procedures will have to pay for it”. Well not two days later one of my “stars” cashed a stolen check and when I reminded her she agreed to pay for it because she didn’t follow the proper procedure, she sent her father in who was going to sue me because I had no right to do that. He said I should find some other way to discipline her, so I did, I threw him out, told him to keep his wife out and fired his daughter on the spot and if any of them came near the place I would have them arrested. I guess I was just supposed to keep eating these bad checks.

Seems I am ranting here a bit huh? But I have a problem when there are no consequences for bad actions. Kind of like the Obama healthcare plan. I should pay for the one who doesn’t take care of themselves or who doesn’t work. What a country.
